o    ACHT is an all volunteer, local group

o    Its mission is to ensure that all county residents have access to information, resources and testing for breast cancer with particular focus on the uninsured or underinsured.

o    There is no paid staff;  there is no national organization

o    All funds are used locally for county residents.

o    Recipient of the 2009 Public Health Community Achievement Award in the state of Michigan

·         Mammogram screenings: ACHT partners with major health service providers to ensure all residents have access to breast cancer testing. We work with the Health Department to increase the allocated state funding and directly pay for others not covered.

§  Incidences – Antrim rates are similar to Michigan & US

·         21 incidences annually equates to a rate of 134 per 100,000 women

§  Mortality – Antrim rates are the highest in Michigan

·         5 deaths annually equates to a rate of 31 per 100,000 women

o    Health Department-BCCCP (Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program)

§  Women 40-64 years, income restrictions, estimated 400+ eligible for this program

§  ACHT does not pay for these.  We spend our funds on education and awareness to encourage women to use this program

o    Munson’s Mammography Assistance Fund covers women and men who don’t qualify for BCCCP.

§  ACHT pays $50 for a screening mammogram but as much as $275 for other tests like diagnostic mammograms, bilateral ultrasounds, etc

o    Mammogram screening/testing activity: This is our annual measure of effectiveness.  ACHT has established targets of 150 (2009), 200 (2010) and 250 (2011).

·         Education and Awareness: ACHT has dramatically increased its focus and effort towards creating broader awareness of breast cancer detection and prevention.  Despite the significant increase in women tested the Health Department estimates that we are still only covering 1/2 of those eligible in Antrim County.

o    Education classes to 300+ 9^th graders annually

o    Books for all high school and community libraries

o    Participation in local health care events, community nights, health fairs, etc.

o    Work with area businesses and chambers of commerce to encourage employee participation

o    Present to numerous civic and service groups

o    Distribute flyers, posters, information brochures throughout the county

o    Fund billboards, weekly ads,  theater ads,

o    Generate news releases for newspapers, TV and radio coverage.

·         Patient Services: ACHT funds a variety of other needs as part of its commitment to help cover items others don’t.

o    Genetic testing

o    Transportation for clinical trials

o    Gas cards for travel to have a mammogram

o    Prosthetics, wigs, etc.

o    Provide personal education, support and follow-up for newly diagnosed patients and their families
